The Deadman Isn’t Done With You Yet: DC Extends Series to 12 Issues
Boston Brand is sticking around to haunt your pull list a little bit longer.
Just as The Deadman #3 arrives in local comic shops today, DC Comics has dropped a massive surprise for fans of the supernatural superhero. Originally solicited as a six-issue limited series, DC has officially announced that The Deadman will now continue for an extended 12-issue run, meaning Boston Brand will possess the comic shelves for six more months.
This critically acclaimed title is part of the massive DC Next Level slate we highlighted during SDCC, and its early success proves that fans are incredibly hungry for weirder, creator-driven takes on classic characters.
A Spirit-Lifting Success
The creative team—consisting of writer W. Maxwell Prince, artist Martín Morazzo, colorist Chris O’Halloran, and letterer Good Ol’ Neon—has been delivering a truly unique, morbidly hilarious, and visually striking journey through life, death, and the strange spaces in between.
“The response to our Deadman story has been absolutely spirit-lifting,” said writer W. Maxwell Prince when DC officially announced on their blog today that the series was doubling in length. “We’re having so much fun giving new life to Boston Brand and his purgatorial world…and we’re not ready to give up the ghost just yet. Here’s to 6 more issues of monsters, mantras, and mystic math!”
Descending into Perdition in Issue #3
The news of the extension perfectly coincides with the release of The Deadman #3, which sends our titular apparition on a dire and dangerous mission straight into Hell.
Described with Prince’s signature rhythmic, poetic flair, this issue boasts a “morbid disquisition concerning the attrition/detrition of the human condition.” Boston Brand finds himself surviving the Stygian conditions of a putrid Perdition—a living, breathing, country-sized conniption filled with hideous demons, gargoyles, ghouls in decomposition, and physical positions that defy medical science. It is a wildly ambitious setting that gives Morazzo and O’Halloran the perfect canvas to flex their horror muscles.
Critical Acclaim for Boston Brand
It isn’t hard to see why DC decided to double down on this series. The Deadman has been pulling in rave reviews across the comic community for its refusal to play it safe.
- Comic Crusaders: “This is DC taking a cult character and refusing to sand down the weird edges. Bless that.”
- GeekDad: “Great comedy, some deeply primal horror, and some incredibly emotional moments…pretty close to a perfect comic book.”
- ComicBookClique: “Everyone’s interpretation of the afterlife from this creative team is so weird and wonderful.”
- ComicBook.com: “A whole lot of dark, honest fun.”
The Future of DC Next Level
The Deadman is just the tip of the iceberg for the DC All In initiative. Fans can expect even more bold new directions and creator-driven #1s for iconic characters like Zatanna, the Teen Titans, Doom Patrol, Vixen, Jonah Hex, Batwoman, and Lobo in the months ahead. With heavy-hitting creators like Skottie Young, Joshua Williamson, Jeff Lemire, and Mariko Tamaki on deck, DC is building toward a landmark year of storytelling.
The Deadman #3 is available now wherever comic books are sold, so make sure to grab a copy and secure this extended 12-issue run on your pull list!
