The Alien Wilderness: Brutal Survival in Red Roots #2
The debut issue of Red Roots set a dark, mysterious tone, but Red Roots #2 wastes no time throwing us directly into the meat grinder. DeFelici’s strength has always been his ability to build worlds that feel incredibly foreign yet terrifyingly physical. The planet our human explorer has landed on isn’t just uninhabited—it is actively predatory.
In this issue, the focus shifts to the immediate aftermath of a crash landing. We see the human protagonist, battered and bleeding, washed up on a desolate shoreline.
Before he can even gather his bearings, the local wildlife arrives. Two purple, canine-like predators with elongated, tooth-filled jaws emerge from the shadows. They don’t see a traveler; they see an easy meal.
Preview Analysis: Cleaving Through the Danger
The silent, tense pacing of the opening pages builds tension beautifully before exploding into sudden, shocking action.
The alien beasts pounce on the helpless survivor, tearing at his flight suit. The panic is absolute as the explorer screams, trying desperately to shield his face from the snapping jaws.
Pinned to the dirt, the human scrambles for anything he can use as a weapon, managing to grab a heavy rock. He smashes it against the skull of his attacker, but it is a losing battle. Just as the lead beast prepares to deliver a fatal bite, a massive shadow falls over the beach.
In a stunning display of power, a giant, gray-skinned alien warrior leaps into the fray. With one swift motion, he swings a massive battle axe, cleaving the attacking beast cleanly in two. Standing tall amidst the blood and spray, this imposing antihero looks down at the terrified human and dryly remarks, “Not your best day, huh?”
