This Day in Comics: The Arrival of the Externals in X-Force #10
On March 24th, we look back at a key moment in comic book history: the debut of the Externals in X-Force #10 (1991). This issue introduced a fascinating group of mutant characters who would play a significant role in the Marvel Universe.
Who Were the Externals in X-Force #10?
The Externals were a unique subspecies of mutants. Most notably, they were initially portrayed as immortal. Furthermore, these characters were often antagonists of the X-Men. They were also considered very important, with a major destiny tied to Apocalypse’s rise to power. However, over time, many of them met their end.
Key Players Introduced in X-Force #10
Interestingly, only Selene, a character already known to readers, survived the eventual purge. Several new figures were introduced in this issue. These included Saul, Absalom, Gideon, Nicodemus, Burke, and Crule. This group formed the “High Lords.” They were self-proclaimed and focused on power games. They also aimed to manipulate events from behind the scenes.
The Roles of Crule, Candra, and Selene
Specifically, Crule acted as an enforcer and assassin for the other High Lords. On the other hand, Candra and Selene operated independently. They preferred their own schemes and did not participate in the High Lords’ gatherings.
